The five levels
| 0 | Not trained | Hasn't started training on this skill. |
| 1 | Learning | In training. Works only with a qualified person beside them. |
| 2 | Can do with help | Does the job, but needs help with problems, setups, or changeovers. |
| 3 | Can do alone | Qualified. Does the job to standard without help. |
| 4 | Can train others | Qualified, and able to teach the skill to others. |
When a spreadsheet stops being enough
The template works well for one area. When you run several departments, track repeating training by hand, or keep three copies that don't match, Andon Tool's Skill Matrix keeps levels, coverage, and training current for every department, with nothing to email around. New Andon Tool customers get the Skill Matrix free for their first month.
FAQ
- What is a skill matrix?
- A grid of people and skills that shows who is qualified to do what, so you can plan training and cover absences.
- How many qualified people do I need per skill?
- At least one on every shift that runs the job, plus a backup for vacations and call-ins. The template starts every skill at 2; adjust it to your area.
- Does it rank employees?
- No. It shows coverage by skill, not a score per person. It's for planning training.
